My blogpartner MeatAxe is still buried under piles of stress and chaos, and I'm still looking for some time to polish off a few posts about such important topics as cigar humidors and the Jedi Order, but I do have a small question.
It looks like I'm going to get a small bit of cashy money coming up, and I'm thinking of spending it on... another gun, unsurprisingly. I'm feeling pretty good about my handgun situation - about the only thing I'm wanting in that arena right now is some sort of basic 1911 - so I'm thinking EBR, and the EBR I've been in like with since the first time I fondled one in a gun store years ago is a nice wood-furnitured CETME.
Every shootin' iron has its lovers and haters, so I'm wondering if anyone out there reading has any advice on the subject I can consider?

Most CETMEs you see are kit guns from Century Arms. Like all Century products, quality will vary depending on how angry the monkeys were that day.
I would personally avoid it, myself, but you should follow your heart.
Avoid the CA versions, or the whole platform?
Well, I can't speak for the CETME platform, and Tam probably has forgotten more than I ever knew about Century, but I've seen some very bizarre configurations on CA rifles -- including an FAL with a plastic thumb-hole stock. Which makes me wonder at their judgment, i suppose.
And at the range a couple times, I've heard folks taking the name of Century Arms in vain.
This might be one of those situations where you're better off with a used rifle from a person or store you trust. So when they tell you its reliable, you can believe them.
OTOH, if you can find a non-Century CETME, that might be worth pursuing, too.
Yeah, I don't want anything freaky, just a simple wood-furniture semi-auto that throws large bullets a long way.

Heh. A little too snazzy for me.
I'm with Meataxe- find a gun at a local trusted store who'll stand behind your purchase.
My son bought a FAL (Israeli) a few years back, & is generally pleased with it. As a bonus, the metric mags for the thing are dirt cheap.
Shoots the 7.62 round as well... good luck.
"Simple wood furniture semi-auto that throws large bullets a long way"? Got a Garand? CMP, $600 (plus shipping and the BATFE Transfer paperwork to your local Dealer, of course.
CMP Garand is on the list for 2011. But between now & then........
Is DSA the same a Century? They have a wide variety of FAL offerings. Imbel, STG58 Austrian, but not inexpensive.
