Baby's First iPod

So, because no one makes boomboxes anymore, and I need an MP3 player thingie to listen to my RiffTrax, I got my first iPod this week.

Pretty neat. These things might catch on.

Just a tip - when you buy a song, if it's DRM'd to work only on an iPod or in iTunes, you should burn it to a CD and rip it to an mp3 file that will play on any device. That way, if in a few years you see a non-Apple product that you like better you don't have to worry about having 100+ songs that won't play on it because they're locked into Apple's DRM.

I wish I had done that when I got mine several years ago. Right now, if I decided I liked a Zune or something more than an iPod, or if I wanted a less expensive player, I'd either have to spend probably close to $200 extra just to replace all my DRM restricted music, or spend several days burning and ripping CD's to get those songs to play on anything but Apple devices. I'm effectively locked in to iPods now.

It's much better to do it as you buy the songs than to let several years of it build up.

Oh, I still buy CDs. I've only got the thing to play Rifftrax, and they're MP3s I believe. But thanks for the advice - that's a good incentive to not go nuts in iTunes.

Flash in the pan. I dumped all my Apple stock years ago. Its going nowhere.

I don't know if it will work, but I've used Aimersoft products for other things, and they make a audio file converter.
I do know the DVD ripper honors DRM, so I don't know if you'd be able to pull this off, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

If not Aimersoft, there might be some other all-software solution to your problem.

Whoops, my mistake. Aimersoft DOESN'T honor DVD DRM. It just gets confused by some of the anti-ripping tricks that are floating out there.
Blame my faulty memory.

No probs. It fits all my Rifftrax and the dock speakers sound great. And it's so teeny.
