No, Seriously, WTF?

This can't really be true, can it?

Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 appears to have a flash temp of 451 degrees Farenheit.

"It’s hard to believe, but true: under a law Congress passed last year aimed at regulating hazards in children’s products, the federal government has now advised that children’s books published before 1985 should not be considered safe and may in many cases be unlawful to sell or distribute. Merchants, thrift stores, and booksellers may be at risk if they sell older volumes, or even give them away, without first subjecting them to testing—at prohibitive expense. Many used-book sellers, consignment stores, Goodwill outlets, and the like have accordingly begun to refuse new donations of pre-1985 volumes, yank existing ones off their shelves, and in some cases discard them en masse."

I may be a knuckle-dragging gun-clinging Judeo-Christian-tolerant right wing conservative lackey of the military industrial complex and a slavish adherent to the precepts of the Project for a New American Century, but, sang froid!

These are BOOKS. You can't just destroy them! They're... they're books, for fuck's sake!

I swear, a van full of tar & feathers, enough for 535 house & senate critters, is long overdue.

(enraged hat-tip to Little Green Footballs and Protein Wisdom.)

Not that I agree with the CSPIA legistation on any level, but go read this:

http://www.cpsc.gov/ABOUT/Cpsia/draftphthalatesguidance.pdf

This specifically excludes books except those marketed as toys. They provide an email address at which to discuss your concerns with the act.

Here's a great article full of links to articles from every state about CPSIA 2008
